Dr Olivia Fleming will join the Ochre Medical Centre Scottsdale in October where she will spend 13 weeks exploring rural medicine in a program funded by the Federal Department of Health.
The Rural Junior Doctor Training Innovation Fund is a community-based program designed to encourage more doctors to choose a rural general practice career. The program is the first of a number of programs that train, mentor and support doctors as they acquire experience in rural medicine through different stages of their training.
We asked Dr Fleming a few questions about herself:
Where are you from?
I am from Hobart.
Where did you do your medical degree?
I completed most of my medical degree and training as a junior doctor before moving to Launceston this year.
What made you decide on medicine as a career?
Before medicine I started a charity called The Little HELP Project, bringing health promotion and mental health programs to schools and community groups. I love working with young people.
What specialties interest you?
Critical care medicine is a particular passion of mine and I have enjoyed working in the Emergency Department and more recently the Intensive Care Unit at the LGH.
What hobbies and interests do you have outside of your career?
I have a golden retriever called Mumford who is also looking forward to visiting me over the next few months to explore the area. I am excited to work in such a beautiful place and meet many of you over the coming 3 months.
