Brewarrina (locally known as ‘Bre’) is a town in North West New South Wales, Australia on the banks of the Barwon River in Brewarrina Shire. It is about 597 kms from NSW’s capital city of Sydney. The name Brewarrina is derived from ‘burru waranha’, a name for a species of Acacia or Cassia tree. In the 2011 Census the population of Brewarrina was 1,254.
Brewarrina is located on the banks of the Barwon–Darling River in Outback NSW. For thousands of years, the area around Brewarrina was a meeting place for many Aboriginal language groups. Estimates have suggested that the fish traps used by Aboriginal people to catch fish on the river are up to 40,000 years old.Today, fishing and other water sports flourish in the area. The Narran Lakes Nature Reserve, 50 km north-east of Brewarrina, covers about 50,000 hectares. Try fishing for Murray cod, yellow belly and catfish at Four Mile Reserve. Stone fisheries were built on the bed of the Darling River (just downstream from the present day weir) – you can still see them today on a guided tour.
