The team got together in a low-key event to recognise the growth and progress they have experienced over the last 12 months and to plan for the exciting 12 months ahead. The Ochre Health Medical Centre in Eumundi is now providing outstanding clinical services to the local community which is a real credit to all staff, doctors and allied health providers involved.

There were variety of cuisines enjoyed by everyone including Philippine, Australian, English, Indian, American, Vietnamese and Moroccan. Raising Awareness For Men’s Health

Ochre Health Bruce, ACT ran a campaign during November 2014 to raise awareness for Men’s Health. The campaign ran in conjunction with the charity event ‘Movember’ which raises awareness of mens prostate health.

The focus of the campaign for Bruce was to further increase awareness of health issues that affect men such as prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression.

Patients were provided a consultation with a nurse and a GP which was centred around exploring health risk factors applicable to the them and promoting ways they could improve their health through preventative measures.

By running the campaign in conjunction with ‘Movember’ and through the use of social media we were able to reach out to a group of people who would often not seek help.

The commonest reason cited by those men who attended was that their partners encouraged them to do so!

Maureen Thornhill, National Operations Manager, and Jan McKelvey, Nurse Manager, began their ‘cluster’ education road trip tour in the last week of February. They have presented to nursing teams in Queensland, Denilquin NSW, Canberra and Tasmania.

The training included a presentation by Sara Ford from Hartmann Australia on wound care and appropriate product use. Quality Management was presented by Maureen and Jan covered areas dependent on the needs of the nurses such as Four Year Old Healthy Kids Check or explanations and billing of Coordinated Veteran’s Care Program (CVC).

Nurses attending the sessions reported that they found them extremely valuable and they were easily able to apply what they had learned.

Northern and Western NSW nurses are yet to have their sessions. Arrangements are underway for the education road trip to present to them in the near future.

2015 Rural Health Education Scholarship Winners

This is the third year that Ochre Health in conjunction with Ochre Health Foundation has provided the Rural Health Education Scholarship. The scholarship for 2015 has been awarded to Nivanka De Silva from Deniliquin, NSW.

The Indigenous Rural Health Education Scholarship has been introduced for the first time this year. We are pleased to announce that it has been awarded to Bettina Goolagon from Condobolin, NSW.

Nivanka is a fourth year medical student at UNSW. Growing up in the town of Deniliquin, Nivanka’s local family doctor, Dr Mikulin, inspired her to follow a path into medicine. Nivanka said she aspires to be the kind of person Dr Mikulin has been in her community. Once her studies are completed Nivanka would like to work within rural general practice or for overseas organisations assisting in their medical programs.

Bettina from Condobolin is currently studying a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care Practice. The amazing mother of five decided to transition from finance into medicine while working with the Murrumbidgee Medicare Local. Her goal is to achieve all her clinical hours to become a Registered Nurse and then move into Midwifery.

The Ochre scholarships provide $2,000 to assist covering costs related to studies in the health care industry. Bettina said that she is “grateful for the scholarship as it will help alleviate the pressure of having to take time off work to attend classes in Sydney.”

Both awards were judged by Professor Mark Arnold of the Sydney University School of Rural Health based in Dubbo, NSW.
Applicants were asked to write a 500 word response on how they would use technology to help improve health care within rural communities.

Director of Medical Services Dr Hamish Meldrum said

this year we got another group of high quality applicants and we are delighted to be able to assist rural students further their study. Rural students are more likely to return to work in rural locations after graduation and also have more barriers in terms of additional costs to access education.”

CEO John Burns said

We would like to congratulate Nivanka and Bettina and also wish all the applicants a successful year in tertiary study in 2015”

From the CEO

Ochre Health started in Bourke NSW as a company focused on providing workforce solutions to surrounding remote towns and on March 27th the company celebrated its 13th Birthday. While some of the communities we are serving are a little bigger than they were back in 2002, our focus on sustainable workforce and excellence in healthcare remains the same.
Just in time for our birthday we have had another growth spurt with the addition of some new centres to the Ochre network. I would like to welcome the staff and doctors of our new sites in Hervey Bay Qld, Bathurst NSW, Lithgow NSW and Casey ACT as well as our new GPs and staff across our existing sites.
You would have all received a save the date for our Ochre Family weekend which will be held a little later this year in November. The weekend will be held at the Fairmont Resort in Leura, NSW. For those of you travelling though Dubbo on your way we will be hosting a new event called the Dubbo Roundup on the evening of Thursday November 5th and you will have the option to leave your car behind. I look forward to a record turn out this year.
Have a safe and happy Easter break.

Overview
Condobolin (population 3,743) is a charming riverside town in the Central West of regional New South Wales, 450 kms from Sydney. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri people, and the name Condobolin is suggested by some to have evolved from the Aboriginal word Cundabullen — a shallow crossing. Established as a stopover for drovers, Condobolin was gazetted in 1859 and it remains a pastoral township where wheat, sheep and cattle farming still predominate. The Condobolin Agricultural Show, running since 1885, is a still a much loved event featuring competitions for horses (show-jumping and Australian Stock Horse Society), Merino sheep and fleeces, cattle, poultry, agricultural produce, fruit and vegetables, cooking, preserves, flowers, handicrafts, fine arts, photography and scrapbooking.

The best way to discover the area’s natural beauty and national parks, or to explore the local Aboriginal art, is with a country drive through the surrounding wide open spaces. Unusually for a inland town there’s local sailing and water-skiing at Gum Bend Lake (a river diversion created specifically for water sports), and Mount Tilga, 8km to the north, gives spectacular views of the surrounding countryside – it’s a strenuous climb but it’s worth it! The famous CSIRO Radio Telescope is 100km west of Condobolin at Parkes, and was featured the film “The Dish” telling the story of the observatory’s role in relaying live television of man’s first steps on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.

From one-off tourist attractions like Utes in the Paddock, showcasing the work of Australian artists on a wide range of Holden utes, and unique events like the Parkes Elvis Festival (January) or the Condo Chutes & Utes Festival (October) featuring professional bull riders, the vast and ever-changing skies of central NSW look down on an eclectic range of activities that offer a different perspective with every season.

Overview
Collarenebri is a suburb of Regional NSW, Central West Slopes, and New South Wales. It is about 541 kms from NSW’s capital city of Sydney. It is situated in Walgett Shire, on the Barwon River approximately 75 km northeast of Walgett and south west of Mungindi on the Gwydir Highway. It is 16 km (9.9 mi) from Pokataroo which was the nearest railway town prior to closure of the rail service there. Collarenebri is situated at elevation of 150 metres. Collarenebri is a native word of the Gamilaraay galariinbaraay, meaning ‘place of flowers’ or ‘eucalyptus blossoms’. In the 2011 Census the population of Collarenebri was 767.

Collarenebri has long been recorded as a significant site for Aboriginal people living in the area. There are many artefacts and significant sites along the Barwon River. On Collymongle Station there are some very old aboriginal carved trees. There is a well maintained Aboriginal cemetery just outside the town which is unique to the area, with graves covered in crushed and melted glass and decorated with items that represent that person.

Many of the buildings in Collarenebri today date back to 1910. Collarenebri was among the last places in Australia to be converted from a manual switchboard to an automatic telephone exchange (in 1986).

Collarenebri is regarded as one of the best inland fishing locations in Australia. The Barwon River at Collarenebri is renowned for its plentiful water supply and fantastic fishing sites. It provides sanctuary and recreation during long hot summers, with kilometres of secluded camping sites. Any of the buildings in Collarenebri today date back to 1910. As is many other towns of its era, the early streetscapes of Collarenebri were shaped by fire, which frequently destroyed buildings and so heralded rebuilding and change. Wander around the town and imagine what the early days may have been like.

Brewarrina is located on the banks of the Barwon–Darling River in Outback NSW. For thousands of years, the area around Brewarrina was a meeting place for many Aboriginal language groups. Estimates have suggested that the fish traps used by Aboriginal people to catch fish on the river are up to 40,000 years old.Today, fishing and other water sports flourish in the area. The Narran Lakes Nature Reserve, 50 km north-east of Brewarrina, covers about 50,000 hectares. Try fishing for Murray cod, yellow belly and catfish at Four Mile Reserve. Stone fisheries were built on the bed of the Darling River (just downstream from the present day weir) – you can still see them today on a guided tour.
